I was a little bit disappointed to get to the end of my DermalogicaPrecleanse* recently, as I really enjoyed the way it easily cleaned my
makeup off and kept my skin clear until the very end of the bottle. Rather than
rush out to repurchase (tempted though I was) I thought it best to use up some
of my other cleansing oils/balms in order to behave as ‘normal’ people do haha fat chance! I guarantee that I will be repurchasing this in the future though!
The first cleansing oil I pulled out was the Sanctuary
Spa Ultimate Facial Cleansing Oil, which I purchased from Priceline when
the brand first hit the shelves. I was pumped to use it and adore the packaging
and aesthetic of the brand, but for some reason I thought to check out the
ingredients before I slapped it on my face. I was just getting over a huge
upsetting breakout, so when I saw that the words ‘mineral oil’ were first on the
ingredients list, I physically stepped back to think about what it might do to
my skin.
I haven’t been brave enough to test it out despite the rave reviews I’ve read online, I just can’t see how an ingredient like mineral oil
can be good to grumpy skin like mine. I’m not claiming to be an expert on ingredients
or skincare in general, so if you want to read more about mineral oil in
general I highly recommend you check out Beauty Mouth by Caroline Hirons aka the skincare queen. Hirons has spoken at length about the negative aspects of mineral oil, and I think it her blog is a must-read!
I dived into my stash to find something else to use up, and
came across my half empty Antipodes Grapeseed Butter Cleanser, which is
a thick balm inside a thick plastic tub. I loved using it but moved onto other
things (as beauty bloggers do) in order to review for the blog, but I am really
happy to come back to this. It needs to be removed with a flannel/muslin cloth
and I find it really moisturising, but I’m happy to report that it doesn’t leave
me oily or break me out.
Do you precleanse every day?
Do you prefer cleansing balms or cleansing oils?
*Provided for review, but that hasn’t affected my intense
love for it. Thanks Dermalogica! Honesty, always.
I own and loathe Dermalogica Precleanse (yes, only person on the planet to feel this way) but have the Antipodes Butter Cleanser making its way to me. (:
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment Michelle, it is always interesting to hear other opinions on a product you love! I'd love to hear how you get on with the Antipodes butter.
DeleteI've used the Dermalogica Precleanse in the past and I've loved it! As far as mineral oil goes, I am devoted to my Eve Lom Cleanser, which does contain mineral oil. I don't know very much about mineral oil but I've heard that it is alright to use in cleansing products as you aren't leaving them on your skin, but rinsing them off. I've never broken out from the Eve Lom cleanser, that being said, everyone is different!
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear you loved it too Kimberley! I have heard (from Hirons + other sources) that mineral oil is pore clogging no matter how fast you rid your skin of it-though if it works for you, more power to you! I have a suspicion that it wouldn't harm my skin too much, but I am blemish prone as it is so am too scared to risk it! You have great skin, and that Eve Lom cleanser does sound pretty nice from what I've read :)
DeleteI use both Eve Lom and the Sanctuary Spa oil. No ill effects for me from the mineral oil.
ReplyDeleteWhat Kimberley says makes sense!
@Missy wonderful to hear that, I know a lot of people who agree with Kimberley re: washing off makes it okay and I know a lot of people love both cleansers :)
DeleteI bought the Sanctuary Spa Oil and didn't realise until after that it had mineral oil. I ended up using it, because I bought it, and was really surprised at how nice it was. While I liked it I won't repurchase purely because of the mineral oil.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to try out the Antipodes cleanser! :)
@Bottled Beauty I didn't read the ingredients until I pulled it out of my stash, good to hear that you are like me in that sense sometimes ;P I am contemplating trying it out, but I have a big Shu oil in back up too :)
DeleteI only use an oil if I'm wearing heavy makeup and the only one I own is the Mac Cleanse Off Oil. Quite nice though!
ReplyDelete@Kat Ness I tend to wear foundation everyday so have gotten into the habit of double cleansing every day :) I have seen a lot of US bloggers rave about Mac Cleanse Off, but have never tried it myself!
DeleteI love my precleanse! I get lazy pretty often and not use it, but my skin always thanks me when I do!!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree Sarah, whenever I forget it my skin just doesn't feel good, ya know? It is well worth the effort (but we all know that can fall by the wayside lol)
DeleteUrgh I hate using up skincare! I like to keep trying new things! Never tried Dermalogica Precleanse though.. may have to give it a go. Haven't heard anything about mineral oil so I'll definitely check out that blog - thanks for the heads up! xx
ReplyDelete@Jasmine I like using it up, unless it is something that is a staple because then I just see dollar signs floating away haha! I highly recommend you try Precleanse, I think they often do mini travel sizes sometimes. You should subscribe to Hirons, for sure :P
DeleteI love the Dermalogica Precleanse too - though haven't used it in a while as I've been trying out others! I've used and loved the Antipodes Butter Cleanser too. I've used a Shu Uemura cleansing oil as well (I think it was the pink one)which I also loved, and I'm currently using the Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil which I love too and highly recommend! I always pre-cleanse though - whether it's with an oil/balm or a face wipe, it's just 100% routine for me now.
ReplyDelete@Lucy trying out new skincare is always so tempting isn't it! I've used that pink Shu oil as well and quite liked it, but still prefer Precleanse. I was sent another Shu oil that I am yet to try, am excited about that.
Deletei feel like i'm such a lazy lass when in comes to stuff like this. i usually just use bath gels or soaps haha :P
ReplyDelete@Hazel I get lazy sometimes too! What sort of bath gels and soaps do you use? You should try a nice light cream cleanser, I find they are the fastest to remove and best for lazy skin days :)
DeleteThat Antipodes cleanser is lussssh! I bought it for my mum a couple of years ago, but ended up using quite a bit of it myself... lol
ReplyDeleteShame about the mineral oil. This was on my to-buy list, but now I'm freaked. lol
Thanks Angela! It is a good pinch item, good job ;P I think I want to read more about mineral oil, but I still feel really apprehensive about it all ... ><
DeleteThat Antipodes butter cleanser has such an interesting texture and colour! Worth trying for that alone haha:)
ReplyDeleteAlso, we've nominated you for the Liebster award - its essentially a beauty blogger questionnaire. Come visit - we would love to read your answers!
@Erin and Katherine
DeleteIt is so strange, feels like little lumps that end up melting on your skin when you rub it in! I've done a Liebster post in the past, I appreciate the mention thank you :)
I have yet to use the precleanse, but I double cleanse! I'm using a cleansing oil at the moment by Aphelia, but I'm going to go back to my favourite Shu Uemura one when that's finished! I still have the precleanse on my wishlist, lol.
