The Scrub Selection

Body scrubs would have to be my favourite body product, followed closely by body lotions thanks to their ability to perfume the skin. I love how clean a good body scrub can make you feel after a shower, and following a wonderful full body scrub experience at a spa in Bali on my recent holiday, I rounded up the body scrubs I've been using lately which are all quite different to one another, and put them on trial.

The creamiest of the lot, the Palmolive Body Butter Peppermint Crush Exfoliating Body Wash ($7.48) is more of a luxurious body wash than anything that would provide an adequate scrub in my opinion, but it's worth noting that I'm partial to a coarse sugar or salt scrub and so I begin with a bias. That being said, I adored this and liked that the small scrubbing particles weren't annoying in any way, and simply provided a touch of mild exfoliation when I used this in conjunction with my shower puff.

This Kmart branded Jasmine Paradise Body Polish is perhaps the most enjoyable scrub for me in the traditional sense of the word, with the strong jasmine fragrance also being pleasant (I'm yet to try the other scents in the range, but look forward to it!) Polish is the perfect word for what this does to the skin, and the oil to scrub ratio is pretty spot on for a product that sits around the $3 mark (though I did get a bit of shower water in it at some stage, and at the start it is quite dry and needs a-mixin'!)

Dirty Works Life's a Beach Coconut Scrub* ($8.80) was the tropical hopeful in my shower caddy, and is a gel formula with sparse scrubby bits scented with artificial 'coconut' (I don't actually get much of a coconut scent from this at all!) I quite liked the Soap and Glory-esque packaging and the fact that it is available at Coles is also a big bonus, but truth be told I'm going to try the other body scrub in the line (Buff Your Stuff!) and leave this one for those who like gentle, daily scrubs.

Cocoa Brown Tough Stuff* ($15.95) is a pretty pink concoction that seems to be pretty big across the UK, and is finely milled and quite scrubby considering the fluid formula. Technically marketed for fake tanning ladies of which I am not one, this gel texture scrubs really well because it's designed for removing the old and grotty tan residue when you want to start afresh. The scent of this is the main drawcard in my opinion - a floral melon scent that is so, so delicious. I sadly dropped and broke the top of this when I first used it so have taken to pouring out of the top after screwing the flip-top lid up, but it hasn't bothered me too much as I really like the scrub.

Is Lush's Sugar Scrub Really All That Sweet?

While I wouldn't say I am the biggest fan of Lush, it isn't often that I travel to the city without popping in to play around in the sensory wonderland. I have a few favourites from the brand, particularly the shower gels and jellies which always smell amazing and do a great job of cleansing, but trying the full range is something I am yet to accomplish.

Back when I was still subscribed to a host of beauty sample boxes, I received the hard Lush Sugar Scrub more than a few times, so I feel like I've given the product enough time to really impress me. Unfortunately for this scrub lover, this one sort of let me down.

The Lush Sugar Scrub has a lovely herbal lavender scent which I like, and is a pretty green shade. It is said to stimulate your skin and the fennel and ginger inside it supposed to tackle your cellulite (high five to that, Lush!) In the official description it asks you not to let the bar come under running water as it will disintegrate, and I found this to be true the very first time I used it. The next few times I made sure to keep the packed sugary substance away from the running water (bit of a mean feat in the shower...) but I still found that this broke down easily and I couldn't manage to get more than two uses from each lump. I agree that the scrub works well at leaving soft and smooth skin behind, but for $6.50 a pop (100g) this is just too pricy for me. If it came in a large tub and was scoopable perhaps I would get along better with this, but for now I say sayonara to this one.

Sweet Orange Scrubbin'

As a big fan of body scrubs in general, I was pleased when the A'kin Sandalwood & Sweet Orange Invigorating Body Scrub* hit my desk. Being a gel based body scrub means that this isn’t as ‘scrubby’ as something sugar or salt based, but I still find it gets the job done nicely and is perfect for those who like a light gentle exfoliation, or those who perhaps scrub it up daily! I have used this as a shower gel in a pinch and find it to be pretty rad at that as well, which perhaps makes the semi-steep price tag slightly more palatable ($24.95 for 200ml) The scent of this is really nice, with essential oils making the sweet citrus a nice natural scent that to my nose is slightly jammy. As with many products available at Echolife it is sulphate and paraben free, so those who keep their eye out for those details should be pleased with A’kin for that.

Ultimately the scent is the saviour for this product, though I would much prefer a tub of rough scrub in this scent. It is available for purchase from Echolife (hooray for free shipping!) and I’d love for you to share your scrub loves in the comments below!

February Empties

The penny has finally dropped, and I’ve begun finishing things before moving onto something new. Keep in mind I’m talking body/shower products more than anything, I still have a different outlook on makeup usage but I’ll save that for another post. I’m enjoying using something and reviewing it before getting to try something new, it is true what they say about anticipation making things more exciting in this respect!

Palmer’s Cocoa Body Scrub- reviewed here, this was a delight to use and something I will definitely be putting into my shower routine again in the future. Love the creamy but scrubby texture that moisturises my skin without leaving the gross film that others do.

Original Source Orange Oil & Ginger shower gel – love this brand for their tangy and true-to-life scented shower gels. This one was nice but the ginger wasn’t for me, so I probably wouldn’t repurchase this particular scent for myself. Still on the hunt for the choc mint version that I can’t seem to find!

Korres Rose shower gel – as I said in my last empties (in regards to the Guava version) these really didn’t live up to my expectations. They didn’t lather all that well and the scent just seems a bit off, so I’ll be sticking with the lip butters from this brand and leaving their shower gels on the shelf.

Palmolive Body Butter Strawberry Smoother Exfoliating Body Wash – long name, and took a long time to get this one out of my shower. I wanted to love this, I really tried to, but the scent was too artificial and didn’t sit nicely with me at all. Definitely won’t repurchase, though I am tempted to try the Mango version to give Palmolive a chance to redeem themselves…

Watson’s Moisturising Facial Mask with Cucumber Extract – one of my Thailand purchases, but not my favourite from the bunch I picked up there.  I don’t feel like this makes a huge difference to my skin, though it is still a nice sheet mask.

Priceline Round Cotton Pads – I use these to remove eye makeup each night before I go in with my Dermalogica Precleanse for the rest of the face, and they are wonderful. I am trying the Daiso cotton squares at the moment which are much softer, but I still think I might prefer these cotton rounds.

Maybelline Lash Stiletto Voluptuous Mascara – Quite a dry formula that gave my lashes a nice bit of length. I used it up quite a while ago and it has been at Chris’ place so I can’t give a thorough review based on the vague memory of it all.

Norsca Anti-White Clear Sport deodorant– not a fan of this, it did leave white marks for me (being a true Melbourne girl, black rules my wardrobe!) and left me feeling quite damp immediately after application. A nice big can for the price, but the formula was a let down so I won’t be repurchasing.

Rexona Women Crystal deodorant – I kept this mini in my handbag to freshen up after a swim or during a long work day, and I really liked it. I will be repurchasing another for my handbag as soon as I get to Priceline.

Scrubbing with Chocolate // Palmer's Cocoa Body Scrub

Being a total body scrub snob, I initially dismissed the Palmer’s Cocoa body scrub when I bought a cheap pack which contained it alongside a body butter. The idea of a lotion-like scrub filled with sparse particles put me off, but being a fan of the brand I threw it into the shower anyway. I should know by now not to judge a book by its cover (or a product but the formula!) as this silky scrub has changed my opinion of what a body scrub can be. The chocolately scent is pure heaven (and has been helping me steer clear of Smarties…) while the texture of the scrub is really working for me. It is moisturising without leaving a noticeable film behind (pet hate right there!) because of the shea butter, cocoa butter and Palmer’s staple vitamin E, so it is almost like applying a body butter, in the shower! The scrublets in this are actually crushed up cocoa beans, which I think is pretty rad, and they do a top job of smoothing out my skin. All in all, this impressed me greatly considering I didn’t have high hopes for it at all. In fact, since it is only $10.99, I am going to repurchase when the chocolately goodness runs out, lest my skin get mad at me.

Soap & Glory Flake Away : Transforming Scaly Legs from Reptilian to Radiant!

I must admit I am a bit of a body scrub fiend, and because I use them almost every time I shower, I get to try out quite a few different types and brands. The latest one I’ve used is Flake Away from Soap and Glory! I bought this tub from Boots in Thailand earlier in the year, and even though it was heavy in my suitcase it was on sale if you bought two (I totally stashed the other in Chris' suitcase when he wasn't looking!) so I couldn't pass it up.

This scrub has that well known ‘Soap & Glory’ scent, which reminds me quite a bit of Miss Dior Cherie perfume. The scent is quite a strong one, so I would definitely suggest having a sniff in store and being certain that you are a fan of it before you purchase. The tub is a huge 300ml and at Kit Cosmetics it is only $16.95!! I honestly thought it was much more than that, for the amount of uses per tub that is incredible value. They also have a travel size 50ml tub for $5.95, if you have a holiday planned or wanted a stocking stuffer, mini S&P is the way to go.

 

Flake Away is quite sandy in texture, but has plenty of oils inside to keep it smooth and easy to use. It definitely gets the dead skin cells away, and though it leaves a bit of residue I found it moisturising without feeling gross (unlike the Burt’s Bees cranberry scrub, review here) The scent lingers on the skin for quite a while, so if you are pairing it with other Soap & Glory products (like their Hand Food hand cream!) or that Dior perfume, it could work perfectly when layered. I tend to use it before bed, and find it sits nicely with my L’Occitane Cherry Blossom Solid Perfume* which I apply on my pulse points every night.

 

Even though the labels ended up peeling away on my tub of Flake Away, I love the packaging of this scrub. The pot is sturdy and water tight, the sayings make me giggle and overall it looks attractive sitting in my shower. It is quite a large tub, so it doesn’t fit where my usual scrubs go – those with tight shower spaces might have to stash it on the floor! All in all, this is something from Soap & Glory that I would happily recommend, provided the scent is something you enjoy. It is very affordable, does a great job at scrubbing and leaving skin soft and moisturised, and is readily available here.

I don't tend to post reviews on products I'm not fond of very often, but think that I might begin to. I find it interesting to see what people dislike just as much as what they like, and so here is my post on my least favourite body scrub to date. Remember that the opinions are my personal ones, and you might like the aspects of this scrub that I don't, so feel free to share thoughts with me in the comments!

The Burt's Bees Cranberry & Pomegranate Sugar Scrub was released last year, and it won awards from both Marie Claire and Beauty Heaven in 2012. I was so excited to win this from the Burt's Bees twitter page as I had heard so many rave reviews of it, and I got stuck into it as soon as it hit my doorstep.

The scrub is a mix of cranberry sees and pomegranate oil in a sugar crystal and shea butter formula, which leave the skin feeling moisturised when you hop out of the shower. The problem, however, is that I feel as though I am cocooned by a layer of slime that I need to scrub off after using this. My skin feels soft, but when I scrape my nails across my skin (this is gross,I'm sorry) I'm left with a nail full of residue left behind by the scrub. I'm not sure if this is how some people prefer their scrubs, but I am definitely not a fan and don't feel clean after using this.

My main issue is with the cranberry seeds in this scrub, which litter my shower and drive me absolutely crazy. They do work well at scrubbing, but it would take more than that to calm my current cranberry seed rage! Again, the fact that this has won so many awards suggests that others like the cranberry seeds and moisturising formula, so maybe it is just me.

The scent of the scrub is of a strong daquiri, and takes my mind to a bar each time I crack the lid of this. All good in theory, but when I get home from work a daquiri is not something I need, and so I found the scent to be too overwhelming for me.

I suggest that you have a sniff of this before you purchase as it is quite strong, and despite it not being something I like personally I am confident that others will fall in love with the sweet scent. The moisturising aspect of this scrub is commendable, but for me the seeds and residue are too much for this to be worth purchasing in the future. Quite a few of my favourite body products are from Burt's Bees so I think this was just not the right product for me, so I'm contemplating picking up this in the other available scents just to see how I go (it comes in Mango & Orange and Honey & Shea)

Sun Kit : Body Scrub

As a certified fair bear, fake tanning is the only way I go about getting a little colour come summer time. I'm content with most of my paleness, but my glowing legs need a little bronze- just enough to take the edge off, but still leave me the fairest of them all when I'm out. Those who are fair will know how hard it is to slap bronze on fluorescent glowing skin, and so exfoliation is the most important step in any fake bakin' to avoid the oompa loompa knee factor!

I rely on Kit Cosmetics for a lot of my cosmetic and skin care needs, so when I heard that they were releasing a Sun Kit range I was excited to see how scrubby the exfoliating tan prep would be. It comes in a metallic caramel coloured 250g tub, and RRP is $29.95 AUD.

Despite this being a 'working' scrub as opposed to a scrub just for fun, the scent is addictive and makes the whole pre-tan ritual really enjoyable. Even those who don't fake tan/spray tan would enjoy using this when they're in need of a good all over body exfoliation. Ingredients like shea butter, lilly pilly, kakadu plum and quandong makes this tub smell creamy in a super beachy sort of way, which is perfect for summer weather.

This is choc full of sea salt particles which make for a super rough scrub, which I generally prefer especially if I'm about to fake tan. It does mean you should use a light hand though, as too much pressure when rubbing the scrub in can irritate the skin. Just means you have to work less to see the benefits!

This shot shows how dense the particles in this are, which is why it provides such a great all over exfoliation and eliminates patchy self tanning results. I am maid of honor for Chris' brothers wedding next weekend and you can bet that I'll be using this before I head off to get my spray tan!

September Empties

Cannot believe it is already October! Getting so excited for the end of the year, it's something I look forward to each year and this time around it's extra special because I will be celebrating a big birthday amongst the xmas and new year cheer!

A rather mediocre lot of empties this time around, mostly shower goodies. My moisturiser and some of my makeup is almost empty so October should be a good month for making room in my collection. A collection which is almost bursting after ABBW!

On with the empties:

Botanical Creations body scrub in Lily & White Tea

My favourite scrub, I am so heartbroken about this range being discontinued from Priceline. This scent seems so luxe yet this was so affordable, at the end up it was only $1. I have a drawer full of back ups, thank goodness.

Essential Ingredients Vanilla & Coconut Body Wash

This was only $1 at my local supermarket, and though it wasn't as nice as some of my fancier shower prodz, it was definitely lovely considering its price. Would repurchase again.

Avon Naturals Body Wash in Sparkling Cherry Blossom

I used up a different variety of this in my August Empties, and this one was brought out when my friend Candice stayed the night. A cherry blossom fiend she is, we both agreed that this was nice but not really strong in scent. Foams up pretty well though and was nice to use, so will probably repurchase again come the xmas time sales with Avon.

Priceline Cotton Rounds

Those who wear makeup every day (moi) go through these by the boatload. At the moment I'm using a different brand as I found them on sale, but I definitely prefer the Priceline brand ones.

Derma Intensive 2in1 Facial Wipes

These were also $1 in my local supermarket, and I mainly used them for wiping off residue or swatches on my arm. Quite thin and I much prefer my Priceline brand wipes for all over the face. Would still buy these again though, they weren't bad.

Issey Miyake L'Eau D'Issey 1ml sample

I really enjoyed this during September, I adore little sample vials because they give me a chance to test something out before buying a whole bottle and hating it. I mentioned this in yesterdays post as one of the scents I adored during the month. I would consider buying a full size of this, but have a list of ones I'd like before it.

Scarlett by Cacharel 1.5ml sample

This was nice, but nothing that stood out or wowed me. It was given to me by the girls in Perfume Connection when I bought an aftershave for Chris, which was a nice gesture. Wouldn't buy a full size of it, it was nothing special to me.

Neutrogena T/Gel Therapeutic Shampoo

I suffer from dandruff, and it really is the bane of my existence. I tried this out and was initially impressed, but after I tried a few other brands and came back to this, I was disappointed. After using it my hair feels squeaky in a negative way, and it did almost nothing for the dreaded flakies. Am still on the search for a good shampoo for my poor head, if anyone can recommend something I would be utterly grateful.

August Empties

Happy spring my little birdies! August was a busy month for me in terms of uni work, and I'm proud to say I got a lot of work done and stayed generally on top of things. Hoping to finish more makeup items in September though, to make room for the inevitable IMATS/ABBW haul.

So it seems the shower and removal of makeup process is the one most done this August!

Rose Body Scrub, whose brand I am unsure of as I don't speak a language other than English. I purchased this from Daiso in Doncaster (Victoria) and found to be a wonderful light scrub for everyday. Sadly they had none left when I went to repurchase (though they did have matching items in same scent) but I will keep my eye out and definitely get this again.

Avon Naturals Grapefruit and Mint shower gel 200ml. Dad bought me a set of these for xmas and I've only just gotten around to using them. A nice lather and scent, but I'd like the scent to be a bit stronger as I like them full on. From memory they're around $2 each at xmas time, and come in a variety of nice scents. Will be grabbing more come December.

Crabtree & Evelyn Clarifying Body Scrub with Eucalyptus and Essential Oils (50g) was a punch in the face! Scent was powerful and formula was nice and gritty, so if you like eucalyptus this could be for you. Smells too strong for me, so I won't be repurchasing.

Priceline Re-Balance Vitamin Enriched Moisturising Complex Facial Cleansing Wipes (25pack) are my holy grail of wipes. Nothing has beaten them so far, and I really can't see it happening.

Swisspers Facial Wipes (25pack) stung like crazy, and I really regret purchasing a double pack of them. I used this for swatching purposes and to spot clean brushes after use. Will not buy again.

Priceline Round Cotton Pads (100) are great for removing make up at night, and I find these to be great quality and cheap. Will be repurchasing when I run out of the pack of random brand ones I'm using right now.

Face of Australia Gentle Makeup Remover is used in conjunction with the above cotton rounds for removing makeup, this doesn't sting and gets the bulk of my makeup off really well. I have found it to have trouble with the mascara I'm using at the moment, but since I don't like the mascara anyway I will not hold it against them;)

Batiste Tropical Dry Shampoo is a life saver for me, as my hair becomes oily quite quickly the more I work with it. To make blow drys/curls/straight hair styles last longer I spray this on the middle layer of my hair (lifting up top section to avoid the 'grey' look) wait a while and then massage it in. I find it gives me hair volume, too, which I love. The scent isn't my favourite but now that I am in the midst of planning my Thailand trip, I think I'll fall in love with it again! Tropical hair and holiday, be mine!

Benefit Bad Gal Lash mascara had a big wand that took me a while to get used to, but I did enjoy using it once I had a technique down pat. This is in my empties because I'm trying to be good and toss mascaras regularly, plus it had become quite dry and less comfortable on my eyes. This was a freebie with a magazine purchase, which was an awesome gift in my opinion!

Freeman Salt Body Scrub-Guava

 

I stand (and type) before you, a self-confessed scrub addict.

It's one of my favourite times of the day, that moment when I step into the shower and choose a scrub from the collection at hand. A recent acquisition that I burned through quite fast was the Freeman Salt Body Scrub in Guava, which is essentially large salt pieces suspended in a heavily scented gel. This is a formula unlike most of my other scrubs, which is perhaps why I found myself reaching for it constantly (and why it then featured in my last 'empties' post) I tend to favour scrubs that resemble sand in texture and are in tub form, but this squeezy tube was a nice change and worked well in the shower. A plus was the 'easily crumpable' packaging which meant I could get to every last bit of this stuff- I'm not a scrub waster, no no.

The scent wasn't terrible by any means, but I do think I would choose a different one the next time I buy this, as it wasn't 'wow' for me. The scrub was quite effective and left my skin pretty smooth, but I was annoyed by the ever-so-slight residue it left behind. I kept in mind, however, that it only cost me five buckaroos, and so was not deterred by this minor fault. I found that the salt was quite sparse in the gel, and I needed quite a bit for it to really exfoliate. You really have to work for your scrub and some may find that too much of a hassle. Here I will admit a dorky favourite feature:

The first part of myself that I scrub are my arms (no idea why) and the salt felt amahhzing when it hit my hand on the way down, when I was rinsing it off. Weird, yes, but ultra relaxing for unknown reasons.

Pros:

*A range of nice scents to choose from

*The 'salt running over hand' factor

*Easy to use packaging that works in the shower

Cons:

*Packaging looks a little cheap

*Need to work for good exfoliation

*Salt pieces a little sparse

*Need to use quite a bit, therefore you burn through it fast

In the U.S I do believe it retails for $3 USD, and is available at some pharmacies/drugstores.

Overall I enjoyed using this, and though it's not my favourite scrub (I am loyal to my sand-scrubs!) I will be repurchasing. For it's price I think it's a winner, and would love to know what your opinions of it are- so do share!

July Empties!

*Clinique Take The Day Off makeup remover-received this deluxe sample as part of a GWP and kept it at Chris' house. While I liked it, I prefer another makeup remover. A review of the two is coming up!

*Steam Cream in Felicity (ltd ed. tin design)-purchased this from Kit Cosmetics, and it expired on the 26th of the month. Lightweight and fluid, I used up most of this and was happy with it. Will be rinsing the cream out and using the pretty tin to store hair clips



looks full but I promise it's not! Only a little left inside

*Priceline wipes- my very favourite, no other has come close (yet)

*Freeman Salt Body Scrub in Guava- review to come, I powered through this so fast



*Revlon Fabulash mascara- kept this at Chris' and it had become too dry to use comfortably, a little too crunchy for my liking towards the end of it's life. Probably one of the best mascaras I've used in quite a while though, drew compliments literally every time I wore it! Another GWP winner for me.

*Covergirl Amazemint in No Care Bare- found this meandering at the back of my drawers, and realised it was empty. Smells like mint and is a nice nude shade, if I didn't have a million glosses I would consider repurchasing!
