A Golden Makeup Look with Laura Mercier + Sunday Riley

Golden tones can sometimes be hard to make work on my pale skin tone, so I am often dubious when trying a new shade on my eyelids. When this beautiful Gilded Moonlight* pan landed on my desk from Laura Mercier, I was equal parts impressed with the embossed powder and hesitant about how it would look atop my lids. I decided to go for broke and dipped my Royal & Langnickel dense shadow brush into the pan!

Gilded Moonlight is quite a yellow based gold, and I decided to pair the shadow with my Max Factor Colour Elixir Giant Pen Stick in Hot Chocolate as the golden shimmer in the dark nude shade tied in nicely with the overall look. Gilded Moonlight is pigmented but not as buttery as something like Urban Decay, and I can see myself wearing this at Christmas time for that stereotypical festive look! Considering the size of my eyeshadow collection I surprisingly lack gold shadows, with my Urban Decay Naked palette being the only thing that springs to mind for that category, so I am very happy to have Gilded Moonlight nestled in my drawer.

I used a light base as I only had a few errands to run, and my favourite light base is the Dove Tinted Moisturiser topped with a dusting of Maybelline Dream Matte Powder. It gives enough coverage to even out my skin tone and make me feel comfortable, but feels like I’m not wearing much at all which is perfect for a catch up with my local barista ;)

I finished off the look with a sweep of my new Sunday Riley Powder Blush in Blushing, which is a very easy shade to throw on and has made me pop a few more Sunday Riley shades onto my wish list (Honeymoon Night, come to Mama!) I think the next time I use this shadow I will anchor down the yellow tone with a slash of black liner and a chocolate brown in the crease, but I'd love to hear what YOU think I should pair this with next?

How often do you wear golden shades on your face?

What do you think of beautifully embossed pans like this one?

  1. Gorgeous and very subtle! I like gold a lot, but I actually have my eye on that orangey fire shade in the LM line (it has that embossed design, too, but I forget what it's called).

    1. Thanks Larie! I saw that orangey copper shade too, it looks really nice. Liking what LM is bringing out lately but really wanting to try some things from their permanent collection too

  2. What a pretty look! I don't wear gold that often but I really love how it looks. I usually go really subtle and wear it like you do here (but with liner, of course) or totally over the top and team something like Sugarpill Goldilux with a bright colour like Poison Plum. Nothing in between for me! I think a lovely cranberry shade would make this particular gold a little more festive.

    1. @olgiepolgie I hadn't thought of a cranberry shade but that would work so well with this! I might try some of my MAC shades that have a wine tone to them

  4. I have a teeny warm palette (9 small pans I think) from a brand I forget and it has a nice gold shadow - I ignored it for ages until I realised it's a good 'lazy' shade when I don't want to put too much effort in without feeling like I'm going out with nothing on my face (the same vibe as your local barista run I guess!). My eyes are a warm brown so gold kind of goes, despite my pastiness ;)

And I love your look! The embossed pan is too gorgeous, I think I'd never use it ;)

    1. @Sabine They can be really good lazy shades, I agree. Barista run friendly makeup is always good to have on hand, isn't it ;P I like that I know what you look like now, so I can picture shades on you so much more easily now :)

    1. @Saumya I think bronzy golds would really really suit you- this Art Deco collection has a few other shades in single shadows and I am pretty sure the bronzey one is a winner :)

  7. Pretty! I like that it's not too in your face. It's a nice hint of something special. I like gold, but darker golds more on the orange and less on the yellow side.

    1. @Ash I agree, just a subtle hint of glitz (and it really reminds me of Christmas, lol) I prefer darker golds as well, or that with a brown base to make it more wearable, but this was nice for something different :)

    1. @Vita that is a great idea, I often don't wear gold on the inner corners as I am too distracted by pretty champagne colours!
