Sample Swooning

Goodness knows I am not lacking in new products to try, but the lure of a sample pot is sometimes too strong to pull away. I have had my eye on the Diorskin Nude BB Crème since I saw Anna rave about it, but the steep price tag ($72 AUD!) has kept me at bay. I figured that since I had bought so many Dior products in recent months (Bikini Crème Blush, Addict gloss, Addict lipstick, I’ll stop the list here for my sanity…) I’d head down and request a sample of the BB Crème to try at home. I don’t know about you, but having it applied at the counter just isn’t the same experience and I find that they make good products look crappy with their strange techniques. For example, every time I head to Chanel they apply the Rouge Coco Shines on me with a lip brush, which isn’t how I would ever use it at home and just doesn’t look as good. Could also be something to do with their knack of drawing it outside the lip line, every-single-time! Anyway, I digress.

I strolled up to the young woman working the Dior counter at Myer Melbourne (Bourke St, my favourite, for those playing at home) and asked nicely if they could fill me up a sample pot. She got busy doin’ her thang while I swatched cough almost bought cough the other Crème Blushes, and when I swivelled around she had a sweet little bag tied with a ribbon for me. Colour me impressed! I am happy enough with the abundance of perfume samples they fill my bags with when I swipe through with my Mastercard, but when I haven’t spent a dime mmm it feels good!

I was happy with my faux haul (c’mon, it came in a Dior bag!) when I snuck a peek at the newish Hairhouse Warehouse counter while doing my well-trodden rounds of the Myer beauty hall. Perusing the Macadamia Oil stand, I enquired about the Deep Repair Masque as I know it is a favourite in the blogging world. The woman praised it, and handed me a large sachet of it to take home and try. “I know you’ll be back to buy. Enjoy it!” With that, and not a dollar spent, I headed out to a few blogger events where I was continually asked “ooh Dior, what did you buy”, and you know what? It felt good, for once, to say - nothing!

Had a great sample experience lately?
Or can you name and shame some greedy MUA's who aren't fond of handing out samples?

  1. That's so cool they gave you a fancy bag with the sample haha! I never ask for samples because I'm too much of a timid little mouse ... plus I generally just help myself to whatever products are on display if I really want to try something :p I was tempted by the Dior BB cream a few weeks ago but I think it's a bit too light coverage for me to really entertain the prospect of purchasing - plus $72 and whatnot...

  2. What a great experience! I always prefer to get a sample to try at home I find that with the lighting etc at a counter it never looks right! So good to hear some positive experiences with the beauty counters :)

  4. I love when you come across a nice sales assistant that will give you a sample or two to try. Sometimes you're a bit iffy on the product and the moment you get nice service and a sample, you are that much closer to buying it! :)

  5. I'm so shy about asking for samples, I need to be a little more forward I think! You will love that hair masque though. It smells amazing and it really does work a charm :)

  7. When it comes to samples I must admit that I seldom try the samples that I get.
I sometimes do it but that is very rare. I do not use foundation so foundation samples are not treated well by me. The thing is that I used to wear foundation but then something happened to my skin and it did not matter what foundation I used, it still broke me out like crazy. I used to ask for foundation samples to maybe found a foundation that would not brake me out.. that has not yet happened. I just stopped asking for the samples. The samples I do enjoy getting are shower gel samples and perfume samples but those are rather rare over here. I mostly get foundation samples :(
When it comes to the ladies working at our cosmetics stores they could not be better. We have Emotions, KICKS and Stockmann who I mostly go to that sell both expensive and less expensive makeup/beauty/skin/body products and the ladies working in these stores are all amazing :)
Then we also have a few smaller ones were they sell mostly high end products and the one I have visited is owned by one of Vasas loveliest ladies :)
Wow.. I always end up writing the beginning of a novel when I comment :D

  8. This is great. I usually prefer trying out samples before purchasing the whole product. I have learned my lesson for not trying out free samples first because there are times that the product is not that good so its a waste of money. Now i make sure that i try samples first before purchasing, its practical and economical.

  9. There's a Hairhouse Warehouse counter?! I don't know whether I like the sound of that or hate it. Damn, I need to get out more...

  10. I find that when I engage in conversation with the SAs and express interest in the brand/product, they're pretty good about handing over samples. It's when you walk up with the sole purpose of obtaining samples that they start getting weird about it. I got some Burberry samples that I'm saving for fall because they're not going to hold up in the summer heat. :)
